Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den gambling is banned. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
